Making trauma therapy accessible
to those who need it most
We believe that anyone suffering from trauma deserves to be treated with kindness, compassion and respect.
We are a small charity providing low-cost trauma therapy to adults in Oxfordshire who do not have the means to pay for a private therapist and cannot access the support they need through the NHS.

People who come to The Metta Centre often have a history of repeated or enduring trauma that is rooted in childhood. These ‘Adverse Childhood Experiences’ include neglect and/or emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
We also work with victims of domestic abuse, refugees and survivors of war violence, as well as with those who have suffered a single incident trauma like an assault or accident.
Symptoms of trauma can include:
flashbacks and nightmares
anxiety and panic attacks
being easily triggered
feeling overwhelmed or out of control
having strong negative feelings like anger, guilt and shame
being hyper-vigilant, watchful or on guard
dissociation
feeling numb or depressed
Because trauma affects the mind, brain and body, conventional therapeutic approaches, such as talking therapy, are limited in how far they can help.
We use two body-based approaches – EMDR and Energy Psychotherapy - designed to re-process traumatic memories and re-regulate the nervous system. When practiced in the context of a supportive, psychotherapeutic relationship, these are highly effective.
Click here for more information on our approaches.
Clients receive up to 16 sessions of trauma therapy lasting for an hour at the same time each week. Our specially trained therapists work online using Zoom and we also offer some in-person appointments at The Friends Meeting House in central Oxford.
We teach clients mind-body energy techniques they can use during and after therapy to help manage stress and anxiety and regulate their emotions. We also offer Self-Care groups to people on our waiting list.
If you are an accredited psychotherapist trained in EMDR or Energy Psychotherapy and interested in volunteering with us, we would love to hear from you.
We accept self-referrals and referrals from agencies in Oxfordshire who work with vulnerable adults. People can also be signposted to us by their GP or NHS mental health professional.
Because of the volume of enquiries we receive, we can only open our waiting list once or twice a year. When the list is due to open, we will post a notice on our homepage and provide links to our self-referral and referral forms here.
If you would like to be notified when the waiting list is about to open please use the contact form and give consent for your personal details to be kept on file.

Our specially trained therapists offer their time and expertise for free but we do ask clients to donate what they can afford to ensure that we can continue providing our service to others.
As a guide, someone on benefits, minimum wage or a student, may be able to afford £5 - £10 per session. Those with a higher income might contribute £15 - £35.
Ability to pay does not affect how we allocate therapy spaces and we do not turn away anyone who really cannot afford to donate because of extreme financial hardship.
We have a vision of a society where:
